Welcome to the Sign Study.
This is a work in progress. My writing is poor and undeveloped. Please be patient. (I can't believe it's been 4 years since I started the online project.)
1995
My retro metal/tin roadsigns fascination began to take hold when I was studying Graphic Design at university. I began to see these rundown markers differently than ever before. Looking past the faded, chipped paint & broken bulbs, a design era that I had not acknowledged became qutie evident. The love of these old signs led me to start photographing and cataloging, partly in fear that they may soon be destroyed. My hunch was correct. Since, I've been documenting these signs, many have disappeared.
2002
This collection of photos soon became an independent art project that I had planned to one day turn
into a coffee table book. Realizing I may never be finished with
this historical project, I decided to somehow "release"
the discoveries I had found along the way. Plus, after many hours
of researching these signs and their makers, I found very little
information or documentation. There may be others out there as curious
as me, so why not throw together a little something?
2006
It's been 4 years since I started this online project. Someday, I will have this completed. I promise. They are more signs to place up here, document, whatnot... a matter of time and priorities. Thanks for visiting!
